1001 Campout Tips Co-Op Thread

New postby Sharpshooter on Tue 16 May 2006 14:40

We're fast approaching that magical time when families are heading out into the woods for summertime campouts.

We have a tremendous amount of experience among this group and the folks on Hiking and Camping on Knife Forums so let's assemble a list of tips between the two groups.

Please post your best tips for camping with the family. I'll assemble both lists and post it as a sticky for reference.

I'll kick it off with a couple...

;) Use frozen plastic water bottles in verious sizes in place of ice in your cooler. As they thaw, your cooler won't become full of soggy items and you'll have fresh COLD drinking water available.

;) If you forgot to bring a pillow, a good quality ziplock bag filled with air does a pretty good job

;) Duct tape a package of Mantles to the bottom of your lantern so you have a replacement set readily at hand.

;) Make up tinder packages with chips and curls from lumber that were dried in a 325 degree oven before. Fill a ziplock sandwich bag with the tinder and store the individual packages in a larger bag. Some dry kindling in larger freezer bags ensures that you'll have material to start several camp fires without any sort of accelerant.

Your turn....

A pressure operating garden vaporiser containing 5 litres of water, is extremely useful to clean things and people with a minimal amount of water, and to refresh the kids when it is 35 deg C.
